Training Safely

In the basic mat Pilates training, all the exercises are divided into three groups; basic, intermediate, and advanced exercises. The harder the practice gets, the more control and core strength are needed to stabilize our pelvis and spine during the movement. The range of motion is getting larger, so the lower and upper body's coordination must be perfectly synchronized. We need more balance and better awareness of the correct breathing technique.

It is often a thin line between the level of exercise where we are challenged and the level where it's not safe for us anymore. Every good trainer can see improvement in your training process and modifies training accordingly. As trainers, we have many tricks to challenge you, but we always keep in mind that training must be safe in the first place. We can see how your body reacts to specific modifications of the essential exercise, how you compensate and wrongly activate muscles to perform a more challenging version of a workout (if the movement is too hard for you).

I have developed a short series of videos that will help you feel the difference in your body while progressing from the basic options of the Pilates exercise into an intermediate or advanced one. It's like a short test that will help you to determine what level you are on. If you start losing control of the stability of your pelvis and spine, if you have a hard time breathing and controlling the coordination of the movement, then you know the exercise is at the moment not the appropriate option for you.
